Antique etching, this print is a lifetime impression dated about 1619 A.D.
Condition: strong print trimmed till the borderline. Few small stains, handwork laid paper. Margin (outside the print) completed. Handwork laid paper. Verso: few remains of old mounting, hardly to be seen. In view of the high age in good condition with few traces of ageing. No damages.

Der Zyklus "Le Combat à la Barrière” von Callot stammt aus dem Jahre 1627, in dem übrigens die Festlichkeiten für den Empfang des Herzogs von Lothringen, Charles IV. auch stattfanden.
Callot führte den Zyklus "Le Combat à la Barrière” als Illustration für eine Zusammenfassung des vom Herzog von Lothringen für die politisch sehr einflussreiche Herzogin von Chevreuse veranstalteten spektakulären Empfangs in Nancy in 1627 aus – ein theaterhaft inszeniertes Spektakel. Callot illustrierte das Textbuch für den Hauptorganisator des "Carrousel" (Turniers), den Maler Claude Deruet (1588-1660).

Callot war einer der berühmtesten und vollendetsten Künstler des 17.Jahrhunderts, ein genialer Vertreter des Manierismus. Seine oft fantastischen Werke vereinigen groteske und elegante Elemente in einem individuellen Stil. E.T.A.Hoffmann beruft sich auf ihn in romanhafter Bearbeitung der Episoden seines Lebens. Viele Künstler, darunter auch Stefano della Bella, gehören zu Callots Nachahmern. Rembrandt, selbst ein Meister der Radierung, war ein kundiger Sammler von Callots Werken. Callots Formenphantasien ist unerschöpflich, uneingeschränkt bewundernswürdig und beeindruckend..

Callot's cycle "Le Combat at la Barrière" dates from the year 1627, in which also the festivities for the reception of the duke of Lorraine, Charles IV. took place. Callot executed the cycle "Le Combat at la Barrière" as illustration for a summary of the spectacular reception in Nancy in 1627,  organized by the duke of Lorraine for the politically very potent duchess of Chevreuse . Callot illustrated the script for the chief-organizer of the "Carrusel", the painter Claude Deruet (1588-1660).

Callot was one of the most famous and most perfect artists of the 17-century, a brilliant representative of  Mannerism. His often fantastic works unify grotesque and fashionable elements in an individual style. E.T.A.Hoffmann refers to him adapting episodes of his life in novels. Many artists, among them also Stefano della Bella, belong to Callots imitators. Rembrandt, a master in etching himself, was a knowledgeable collector of Callot's works. Callot's imagination in forms is inexhaustible, absolutely admirable.
